Panel Session (Wednesday 17.45-19.30)

Could Big Data Become Big Brother?

Chair:  Dr Ariadne Tampion

Technological developments in recent years have made possible and economic the collection of vast quantities of data relating to our day-to-day habits and behaviour.  Should we be worried?  Is this a threat to our privacy and autonomy?  Or should we be pleased?  Does it enable public and commercial organisations to make our lives seamlessly convenient and safe?  This is perhaps the hottest topic of our time, so it is hardly surprising that the issues have been somewhat confused by media sensationalisation. A discussion within a serious AI conference should be an excellent forum in which to identify genuine concerns and dispel spurious fears.

Panel

  • Professor Liz Bacon, Deputy President, BCS

  • Professor Max Bramer, Vice-President, International Federation for Information Processing

  • Emma Carr, Deputy Director, Big Brother Watch

  • Duncan Ross, Director of Data Science, Teradata

  • Sam Smith, Technology Advisor to medConfidential.org
